I saw someone's away message once which said:

"DpR1011 smells."

Obviously they used the %n feature, but when I messaged them, it responded with my first & last name:

"David Ratner smells."

I'm wondering how to do this--do I need to add a buddy comment with for each buddy in order to have them say their name appear? Please help.

well, to me it seems like they are using proxy program..... i dont use any of them, so i cant tell you really...... but one popular one is 'Middle_man'

Yep, that did the trick--I had to use "Rename buddy" feature; however, the majority of people couldn't even see that I had an away message on.

middleman is not a great program; it really has some horrible changes done to the half-decent AIM.

Last time I checked Middle_Man does not hamper any AIM feature...

I could be wrong... I mean I have only been using it since around September and you have been using it for much longer at.. What... 2 hours?
